This is so practical for anyone who is working as peer support specialist; whether as Certified Peer Specialist or Certified Recovery Specialist. This book helps guide newcomers to the field and answers questions people learning to effectively provide peer-run services. I want to point out that peers in recovery can be just as educated as other professionals and they just have the life experiences to add to any training or education they received. I believe that someone working as a peer support specialist needs to consider the need to get some formal training or education since merely experiencing some life challenges prepares us for helping others. We also needed the objective information that others in the profession have been taught. It bothers me when I hear peer support specialists disparage clinicians without lived recovery experience, because these members of the helping profession still have their training and their compassion to offer. Also, clinicians who have spent many years in school also need to be prepared to recognize the possibility that many people in recovery are more than capable of achieving high levels of education just as they did. So instead of it being "us" versus "them" lets begin to collaborate so that we can bring together all possible resources.Product details

It's a great resource tool to have, especially when working in peer support services.
Basic easy to read. Of course it doesn't include everything we do but its great for a basic framework. The Book was just what I was looking for .

Charles Drebing presents an excellent guide for peer to peer specialists, to keep at their desk or in their pocket. Written in clear language, this is an excellent resource for all peer to peer support specialists or peer recovery coaches to use. I bought this book, and I found it immensely helpful tool. Particularly his first chapter, about dealing with a critical or crisis situation.

This gem of a book is chock-full of hard won wisdom. It will be very helpful for peers (and also for those who are beginning to work in the mental health field). Peers are as important as anything else in recovering from mental health disorders. But the mental health world can be bewildering; it has its own jargon. This book addresses that problem by defining terms and concepts commonly used by psychologists, social workers, psychiatrists and therapists. It provides many helpful tips for sticky situations that peers might find themselves in. There is a helpful list of contacts at the end, and space for the reader to add telephone numbers so that this pocket book can be personalized. Highly recommended for peers and anyone else interested in helping people in recovery.
